In 1979, Troy started working for his uncle in the construction business where he learned to build wood basements, foundations, apartments and commercial buildings while also working with Wickes Pole Buildings learning how to construct both residential and commercial pole buildings. At the age of 20, Troy became the crew leader at Lott's Construction managing multiple home construction sites while also learning to build in-ground swimming pools. Then in 1990, Troy started Troy's Construction Co. starting with small projects while eventually moving toward full penalized custom homes and even a site condo. He was a member of South Central Builders Association and served as Vice President for 2 years and President for 2 years.

Troy was always looking for better ways to build homes and soon learned how to build floor and walls panels and wood basement walls. He found that in Michigan, a house built with panels allowed for higher quality homes that could be built quickly. His team could frame a single or two story 2,200 sq. ft. home with an attached garage in one day which included exterior and interior walls, windows and trusses. Troy was building 10-20 homes/year, apartments, hotels and land developments. He successfully owned and managed his own crew of framers, roofers, siding, etc. but in in 2001, he decided to leave the construction company to pursue other opportunities.

In 2001, Troy was hired by Big L Lumber in external sales. He became extremely successful in sales and found that he had a passion for working with people. He successfully pursued other opportunities in sales but then met the love of his life Kelley and wanted to build her a dream home. So in the fall of 2011, together they bought a project house on Wall Lake in Delton and another lot next door. Together they built a wood foundation, moved an A-frame house to the new foundation and built a new custom home with an in-ground swimming pool. Troy became excited about building homes again and decided to reapply for his expired builder's license and in February of 2014, he took the 60 hour building course and test to get re-licensed in the state of Michigan.
